The SSAF Residency at 1Shanthiroad was a four-week artists’ residency programme held in July 2016 at 1Shanthiroad, Bangalore.
This was the second edition of a residency for young and upcoming artists in India. The aim is to provide young artists with opportunities to connect with their peers, to create a network of artists for dialogue and discussion about contemporary art practice, to encourage conversations across genres, and to facilitate peer-to-peer learning and critique as well as working in a shared studio space.
The six participating artists in the July 2016 residency programme were Tsohil Bhatia, Ashok Vish, Sandeep T.K., Yash Bhandari, Priyanka Govil and Aaiushi Beniwal, working in various fields such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, performance and film.
The artists were selected on the basis of their ability to push the limits in their current practice and were given an opportunity to do this. Some of them were recommended by their teachers and by other senior artists to 1Shanthiroad.
The four-week residency programme concluded with a two-day exhibition and an open studio visited by artists, local art students, art educators, collectors and connoisseurs.
