NEXT-STEP Residency Programme 2024

1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery’s annual NEXT-STEP Residency Programme gives a platform to five emerging artists to reside at 1Shanthiroad Studio for four weeks, allowing them the liberty to experiment with ideas, materials and collaborations. The residency programme provides artists with an environment that is conducive to bridging the gap between the early stages of their education and their career beginnings.

The ninth edition of the Next Step residency received 260 applications. The jury, comprising Gabriel Ethiraj Dattatreyn, Tara Kelton, and Suresh Jayaram, selected the final five artists for the residency: Deparna Saha, Jit Natta, Ravina Bhaisa, Rahee Punyashloka and Zahir KP.

The selected artists, each with unique qualities and innovative exploration of different mediums, were meticulously chosen. This rigorous process ensures the residency is awarded to the most diverse and innovative art practitioners. When awarding the residency, the jury also had to consider the number of opportunities these artists had received in the past, their geographical location, and their social standing to democratise the selection process.

The open studio day for the NEXT-STEP Residency Programme took place on 30 August and the exhibition was on view till 1 September.
